Get to know the artist... Sam Siren

Sam is a self-taught artist who has explored her creativity in various forms, from photography to sculptures, writing to acting, and music to contemporary dance. Her experience with the unique blend of platforms allows her to experiment and utilize a number of disciplines in the creative arts and create unique pieces which have become highly regarded as her trademark style. Her unique creations have been exhibited across a number of exhibitions in Brunei, and she also has her artworks featured internationally in Malaysia, Australia and Indonesia.

We at Creative Space Art Gallery & Studio are excited to have Sam join us as an artist to our upcoming exhibition: EMERGE4: SYNESTHESIA, which opens on Sunday, the 10th of September.

We asked Sam how she came around to being a multi-talented artists and how does it contribute to her artworks for the upcoming exhibition.

“'Never stop’ – meaning, never stop learning about everything around you. Being self-taught, the typical process of creativity, as taught in formal art education, is all but present and thus practice-through-experimentation is often coupled with spontaneity. I challenge myself in my craft by tackling new ideas with novel approaches - working with different mediums and techniques, experimentally.

It’s a theme that I relate to the most, as most of my artworks are synesthesia based or to be more specific chromesthesia as I have mild-chromesthesia which is more in regard to movement.”

We at Creative Space see synesthesia as a phenomenon rather than a condition experienced by such a small number of world’s population and, with that in mind have decided that our next EMERGE project to be themed ‘Synesthesia’. We have invited artists to practice their creative prowess combining their aural and visual senses to translate to the audience, a unique sensation that some may be or may not be familiar with; to showcase artworks that explore the unique world of synesthesia, creating a unique gallery experience.

Sam shares with us what it’s like to have mild a form of chromesthesia and what her aspirations are in joining the EMERGE project.

"My chormesthesia depends on the music I listen to how it turns out and so far the music I selected as my muse for this exhibition gives a more of a light look in my artworks as how I see the colours. Trip hop, nu jazz music are the types of music that inspires my work mostly. Somehow the colours are more vibrant like raw emotions intertwined harmoniously with each other.

My artistic aspiration is that I hope art will flourish in Brunei and also be noticed by more people from abroad, and give more awareness to the public in regards to work that are synesthesia based.”

EMERGE 4: SYNESTHESIA opens Sunday 10th of September 2017 to 8th of October 2017, and the public are invited, with headphones/ earphones in hand, to immerse themselves in the world of synesthesia.

EMERGE is an initiative by Creative Space Art Gallery & Studio to provide a platform for local emerging artist to showcase their artworks to the public The aims of the EMERGE project includes transforming artist’s creative endeavors into a sustainable activity and to contribute to the development of the Sultanate’s contemporary art scene.
