Maziyah Yussof is a visual artist, her methods involve using traditional painting mediums such as acrylic, watercolour and oils, as well as collage and pattern making. She developed an original process of pattern-making using triangles inspired by the natural world, explored in both organic and structured manners. This style became a signature feature in many of her subsequent works.
We at Creative Space Art Gallery & Studio are delighted to have Maziyah join us again as an artist to our upcoming exhibition: EMERGE4: SYNESTHESIA, which opens on Sunday, the 10th of September. She shares with us her process in creating her unique artworks and why she continues to create pieces of art.
“The titles serve as a starting point - an initial source of interpretation for the viewer to navigate through using one’s own imagination. To me, words are just as powerful as images, which is why I always make it a point to create a narrative within each painting. I usually begin a painting with a particular scene in mind; a natural backdrop, which then transforms into a dream like setting.
I suppose it all comes down to inspiration. If something inspires me… I would want to recreate that experience through my art. The setting was inspired by one of my favourite artworks “The Great Wave of Kanagawa” by Hokusai. It all goes back to the idea of inspiration... artists who create art in whatever form be it fashion, music or the visual arts will naturally inspire each other. And I always feel that that is the point of art.
EMERGE 4: SYNESTHESIA invites artists to showcase artworks that explore the unique world of synesthesia by combining audio material and visual artworks together to create a unique gallery experience. The exhibition allows local talents to practice their creative prowess combining their aural and visual senses to translate to the audience a unique sensation that some may be or may not be familiar with, allowing a better understanding of synesthesia.
Maziyah shares with us her thoughts on what synesthesia is to her and how she interprets it.
“I think the theme is great. I've not experienced it myself but it sounds like an amazing ability to have. I can't quite grasp what it must be like to experience it, but as a visual artist, I understand what inspiration feels like... which is the closest thing I can imagine... it’s like when i see the colours in the sky, and i am immediately inspired to create an artwork based on how i felt looking at it.

EMERGE 4: SYNESTHESIA opens Sunday 10th of September 2017 to 8th of October 2017, and the public are invited, with headphones/ earphones in hand, to immerse themselves in the world of synesthesia.
EMERGE is an initiative by Creative Space Art Gallery & Studio to provide a platform for local emerging artist to showcase their artworks to the public The aims of the EMERGE project includes transforming artist’s creative endeavors into a sustainable activity and to contribute to the development of the Sultanate’s contemporary art scene.
