The artist developed his style of using monochromatic and pale muted colour scheme, using mixed media medium that gives different surface quality. He explores themes of dark, surreal atmospheres, human figure and anatomy is his preferred subject matter.
We at Creative Space Art Gallery & Studio are delighted to have Mardhi join us again for our upcoming exhibition: EMERGE4: SYNESTHESIA, which opens on Sunday, the 10th of September. He shares with us his style as an artist and what is it about his practice that’s unique.
“I create mixed media artworks and drawings through a radically singular approach that is nevertheless inscribed in the contemporary debate; the use of references and ideas that are so integrated into the process of the composition of the work that they may escape those who do not take the time to explore how and why these images haunt you, like a good film, long after you've seen them.
My use of mediums that interacts with light to create atmosphere and also the layered meanings and interpretations of the subject matter. With a conceptual approach, I try to approach a wide scale of subjects in a multi-layered way, likes to involve the viewer in a way that is sometimes physical and believes in the idea of function following form in a work.”
This will be Mardhi’s second EMERGE exhibition and we asked for his thoughts on the theme of the upcoming exhibition, ‘Synesthesia’ and his approach to this exhibition’s theme.
“I have thought of doing something similar, for example, interpreting songs into paintings/artworks. However, the theme synesthesia is much more in-depth, (I think) more abstract? And more involved. I think this is a challenging and fascinating theme to work on, and I am excited to work with this theme.
Perhaps through both abstract and realism; I would probably associate certain beats, sounds (loud or soft) into patterns or mark making whereas the overall mood of the audio will/can be deciphered or describe as the setting or associate it with certain objects, place or things.
Music is a mysterious thing. Sometimes it makes people remember things they do not expect. Many thoughts, feelings, memories... things almost forgotten... Regardless of whether the listener desires to remember or not”
EMERGE 4: SYNESTHESIA opens Sunday 10th of September 2017 to 8th of October 2017, and the public are invited to immerse themselves in the world of synesthesia by enhancing their gallery experience with audio material accompanying the respective artworks.
