Sustainable Fashion meets Art!

Creative Space’s first Fashion Installation Exhibition this March 02-04, 2018

Pop-Recovered: Reduce. Reuse. Upsykl.

March is just around the corner and our gallery will have the pleasure of hosting an Interactive Fashion Exhibition featuring thoughtfully designed articles of clothing made from upcycled material. This project is a collaboration between Creative Space gallery and ÜPSYKL - an eco-fashion brand which recycles old clothes and convert it to new styles using the process of upcycling.

When the ÜPSYKL team reached out to us with their idea we couldn’t help but jump on board to support this project. Many of our core values and visions matched up making it quite complimentary for our teams to work together. ÜPSYKL shared with us that in the long run, they aspire to operate as the main platform for local Bruneian designers to be united under Fashion and Textile Council or Federation to further uplift and expose the designer community in Brunei on a regional and international level.

As for now as they make ready to launch their first collection ‘Pop-Recovered’ working with local designer Humaira Zakaria. The designs and creation of each article of clothing places emphasis on mint waste materials and how they can be given a second life through a dash here and there of creativity and thoughtfulness the results are delightfully experimental. ÜPSYKL’s first collection that will be launched this March is inspired by the energies of ‘fun and playfulness’. We’ve had a peek into their closet and found some intriguing personalities translated through the collection.

The global consumption of fashion has gradually been rising for the past decade (at $450,000m), and will continue to do so at an estimated worth of $600,000m by 2019. The speculated statistics may have indicated the ever-rising pattern of consumption in apparels worldwide, particularly with the existence of fast fashion. In our research into this project we came across shocking figures, according to an article by A. Siva Sakthi on Fibre2Fashion, “To produce a kilogram of cotton equivalent to one T-shirt or a pair of jeans -- requires more than 20,000 litres of water, one of the major resources. About 8,000 types of chemicals are used in the conversion of raw material into garments. If some clothes do not sell or when they go out of style, they land in giant landfills, adding to the pollution.”

This is an awareness we hope our collaboration with ÜPSYKL will culture into our local economy and bring about a more sustainable process of how we consume; addressing the need for the current generation without compromising the future generation.

Along with the launch of the collection our curatorial team has been working closely with the ÜPSYKL team to present to our audience an interactive installation that will serve up some food for thought. It is the first time our gallery will house a fashion exhibition and we intend to make something interactive for everyone from the art enthusiasts to the fashion trendsetters to enjoy. This exhibition will be open from the 2nd till the 4th of March 2018, opening hours: Friday 6pm - 9pm, Saturday to Sunday 10am-9pm. Drop by to view the exhibition, chat to us about fashion, art, sustainability and perhaps bring home a piece from the ‘Pop-Recovered’ collection. With that we leave you with some concepts to consider: ‘Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle and Upcycle!’.
